The highly anticipated release of Slay the Spire 2 has been a huge success. 3 million copies sold and a week straight at the top of Steam’s game charts show folks are really loving it. And in an update, developer Mega Crit Games discussed how the five-year wait for a sequel was more than worth the wait:
Slay the Spire 2 launched just one week ago and has already reached 3,000,000 copies sold with over 25,000,000 runs started!! (Approximately a few million are absent from that final figure since we began tracking data shortly after release. Just… wow.) Our crew is beyond delighted to see this much passion for what we’ve built over half a decade—but our mission is only getting started!
The game has now surpassed Elden Ring Nightreign as Steam’s biggest roguelike, with the early access sequel experiencing over double the number of launch players from the original. In a time where studios never know for certain if their releases are going to flop, Slay the Spire 2 has certainly hit the mark and fans of the franchise can also expect plenty of new features to come soon.
Slay the Spire 2 Rides High While Counter-Strike 2 and Apex Legends Return to the Top of Steam’s Charts
Upon its release, Slay the Spire 2 had a rocket strapped to its back and went straight to the top of the Steam charts. However, following an ultra-successful first week, it’s business as usual for Steam’s ‘Top Sellers of the Week’, with CS2 and Apex Legends once again regaining their top spots while relegating STS2 to third place. It doesn’t undermine what has been an incredibly successful launch for the developers at Mega Crit Games, but it does show how dominant long-running free-to-play titles remain within gaming culture.
Even when a game as big as Slay the Spire 2 hits the market with over half a decade of anticipation behind it, Steam’s flagship F2P games continue to maintain strong engagement. CS2 is one of the most downloaded Steam games ever with an estimated 318 million installs, while Apex Legends clocks in with a slightly more modest 70 million installs. Slay the Spire 2 might only cost an affordable $25 yet competing consistently with the most popular F2P games will likely prove to be difficult over the coming months.
As it stands, eight of the top 10 most-played games on Steam are free-to-play, reflecting a broader shift toward accessible gaming models. Many players now balance premium titles with accessible social gaming communities like SweepsLounge, which offer interactive features and flexible participation options.
There’s Plenty More to Come for Slay the Spire 2 Fans
Following its huge early access release, there’s still plenty more to come for Slay the Spire 2 players. In terms of what’s next, Mega Crit has already confirmed that major content updates are in the pipeline but with no specific timeline or roadmap.
Officially confirmed are alternate acts for acts 2 and 3, more cards, and special events, all of which will be part of the “constant journey” to keep the game balanced and players interested. Multiplayer QoL features, a revamp of the badge and scoring system, and official Twitch plugin integration are also confirmed to be on the way.
Of course, it’s impossible not to mention that Slay the Spire 2 is still in its early access phase and has yet to even be released on mobile, with iPhone and Android versions set to come next year, so the fact that the game has already racked up over 3 million copies is incredible.
Once it’s out on mobile and also gets a console release, the new in-game features will start rolling out and the game will no doubt secure itself as one of the most popular of the entire decade based on current trends.
Is Slay the Spire 2 Worth It? Absolutely
Fans of the original STS will be over the moon to know that the long-awaited sequel has hit the ball out of the park.
While F2P games continue to occupy Steam’s top spots, Slay the Spire 2 shows that quality roguelike games are still capable of breaking through, serving as an excellent reinvigoration of the original with a major engine upgrade, updated 2D animations, five new characters — including new classes — and more.
Sure, there are some critics currently arguing that Slay the Spire 2 is actually somewhat of a remake rather than a direct sequel, but the solid range of updates is more than enough to justify its release and price tag.
Even for those who haven’t played the original, STS2 is absolutely worth the purchase, but those on mobile and console will have to wait until early access is over and the game finally gets released across other platforms.
